p.
76—Explain the meaning of the proverb, “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have
to use your legs.” How does this relate
to Alex?
p.
77—Alex was bushed when he finished rigging his ladder, “partly from climbing
up and down with all those heavy things partly from being so tense that I kept
twisting my neck to look at the front gate, and partly from straining my mind
with so many thoughts.” Alex feels his
father would have laughed to hear him say that about straining his mind with so
many thoughts, but his mother always said that strenuous, or hard mental work
was a tiring as any other kind.
Do
you agree with Father or Mother about strenuous mental work? Explain your answer.
I agree with the mother because if you have the strong encouraging mind to do something you will get the mental strength too.I agree with the mother because if you really think about something and put your mind to it you will get the courage and power to do what you need to do The mother has the right idea of how to tackle and deal a problem she knows that you have to have the mind to do something to do it and that's why I agree with the mother.

There ia a meaning behind that proverb. The proverb "If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs." means if you don't think before doing something you will end up doing more work then necessary. This relates to Alex because that is exactly what he did! Alex did not think to try the faucet out for water, and this resulted in him carrying heavy water bottles up a rope latter. He could have saved himself some work if he had thought to try the faucet. That proverb is important, and now I will be thinking about it. Will you?

I think that the proverb “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.”relates to Alex in this situation because it defines what happened. The proverb relates to Alex because if Alex used his head (thought before he carried the bottles up the ladder and tried the faucet first), than Alex wouldn’t have had to use his legs (carrying the bottles of water up the latter). The proverb means that if you use your brain than you will do less physical work but if you don't think first then you will end up doing more work than you need to.

The meaning of the proverb, “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.” Is that if you don't use your head to survive, you must run from those who endanger your life. This proverb applies to Alex because he is trying to survive.
ReplyDelete-Ben B
I disagree Ben. I think it is less about survival, but more about doing more work. I believe it refers to when Alex didn't realize that he had a faucet (not using his head), so he had to carry the water bottles up himself (using his legs). But, it could be interpreted that way, too.
Delete~Derek K.
I agree with Derek that it refers to the faucet, but I never thought about it in terms of survival. That's a cool way to look at it.
Delete-Becca L.
The meaning of this proverb is pretty simple.
ReplyDeleteThe meaning of the proverb "If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs." is that you have to think about possible techniques or solutions to increase your work efficency before you do it. This happened to Alex not being aware of his surroundings made him bring lots of heavy bottles of water up the rope, and he could have used the faucet. This Proverb could most likely help Alex later in the story and more effectively in this time period.
This is a useful thing to have in the back of your mind.

The proverb, "If you don't use your head, you'll have to use your legs" means that if you don't take the time to use logic and THINK about what you're doing, you'll have to physically do the work that you wouldn't have to do if you took the time to think about it. This relates to Alex because he didn't stop and think that there would be running water on his floor, so he carried all the bottles up with him and put lots of strain on his legs and muscles.
ReplyDelete~Derek K.
The meaning of proverb is if you don't use your head to get out of situations your in.You'll just have to use you legs to do the thinking for you.Well that's just a guess of what i think it means.
ReplyDelete-Shaniay C
“If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.” I think this is relating to Alex because If you're trapped in a corner then don’t give up but instead try to run away. I think this is also relating to Alex because he in up high in a room and if the Germans come in the first entrance don’t try to hide from them but climb out the window instead and run away. This is also showing that you have to let your legs do the hard work and not your brain.
ReplyDeleteThis is what I think the proverb means.

question two
ReplyDeleteI agree with mother about mental work, infact sometimes mental work can be more strenuous than physical work. For physical work all you need is to have some strength, even if you're not very strong you can usually accomplish physical tasks. It is also very easy to attain physical strength. That is not the case for mental work, you have to build up your ability to figure things out and think things through, mental strength. To do this you have to do mental work which can be much harder to work through than physical. For example when Alex is getting supplies he has to think things through, and sometimes even make a change of plan on the spot. He has to do this in order to accomplish his task and to stay alive day by day. Alex has accomplished most of his physical tasks with ease, though there have minor bumps along the way he always seems to manage to pull through. He has much more difficulty with the mental tasks, which proves that mental work can be just as hard as physical work and sometimes harder.
- Anna.J
I defiantly agree and I like what you said about mental work! I didn't even think about it. Emma MEM
DeleteThe proverb if you don't use your head you'll have to use your legs relates to Alex because if he hadn't thought of the thing to pull the ladder up in his head he would have to do a lot more physical work pulling up the ladder with his hands.
ReplyDeleteJohn B
The meaning of the proverb “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.” relates to Alex. “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.” means that if you do not think about your actions first, you will end up doing more work than needed. This very much relates to Alex, because he brought the water bottles upstairs, when there was a faucet with running water. Before he brought the water up, he did not think to try the faucet for water. This resulted in him unnecessarily lugging up the heavy water. If Alex had thought a little bit, he would not have wasted his energy.
ReplyDelete-Iman S
The old proverb meant to Alex that he didn't think that there would be water already, so he didn't think it through, and suffered the consequence of carrying heavy, full bottles.
ReplyDeleteMax T.
DeleteThat proverb means that you have to use your head and think before you do unnecessary things, like running away, climbing, and other things. For example, Alex didn’t think to try the faucet for water, and ended up having to carry heavy water bottles up the ladder. He had to use his legs instead of just using his head. Another example of something that might happen is Alex trying to get some food and loot. Instead of using his head and going through the back streets and apartments, he might have to use his legs to run away.
ReplyDelete-Elon L.
I agree with you Elon."Think before you do" is pretty much the same as “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.”
Delete-Becca L.
It relates to Alex, because if he does not use all the advice and his smarts and wisdom that he has in his brain, he is almost completely screwed, so all Alex would have left was his legs to use, so he can escape from the Germans, since it's his last resort.
ReplyDelete- Jason Alpert-Wisnia >:-)
I agree with Mother that strenuous, or hard mental work is as tiring as any other kind. For example, if you are doing homework for 2 hours straight, your brain can gets too tired to think and burns out. If you play a sport for 2 hours straight, your body gets too tired to operate and “burns out”, similar to your what your brain does. Also, some people get “too tired to think”. This shows that mental work is tiring. In some ways, mental work is even more harsh on you. If someone says something that scares you to try to get inside your head, that can be even scarier than the real thing. This is similar to how you have in your mind that something is horrifying, your mind shuts down just thinking about it! Than, when you do it, it really isn’t that bad! In conclusion, hard mental work can be just as, if not more, tiring as any other kind of work.
ReplyDelete-Becca L.
The proverb “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs” can mean allot of things. To me it means if there is no strategic way to handle the enemy run. This relates to Alex to some sense. My first reason to say that it relates to Alex is that Alex uses his brain for allot of things throughout the book but he also sometimes has to run. In the beginning he run when the officers were chasing after him to get back in the line.
ReplyDelete-Daphnee-Anne G.
I think Alex should rely more on his mental strength than his physical strength. I don't believe the head and legs saying applies to him. If he relied more on his strength, he probably wouldn't hide and would just be trying to shoot Germans. But instead he used his wit and is now doing quite well. He even had the idea for the ladder, which seems to be helping a lot. I think he won't be captured by Germans and live to see if his father returns.
ReplyDelete- Lily M.
It is interesting; you interpreted the question in the overall, whereas I interpreted it in the moment, and because of that we have very different responses.
DeleteWillie T.
Yes, Lily, this may be true, but what person in World War 2 in the ghetto would actually go out to shoot the Germans? As the information that we read said, everyone is going out in THE DARK and using SECRET PASSAGES. This signals that they do not want to go out. Yes, although his mental strength is very strong, was he or was he not able to carry those water bottles up the ladder? How exactly does this not connect to Alex, (or the story?)
DeleteEmily E.
Going back to Willie its interesting that you thought about how someone interpreted it, so sort of interpreted it as a mix between Lilly and Willie. Emma MEM
DeleteThe meaning of the proverb “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs” is not directly literal, as is true for most proverbs. The way I interpreted it it that head is in reference to your mind (duh) and feet is in reference to physical labor. Using the this, you can interpret the proverb as if you do not think about a situation, you will have to go through more physical labor. This relates to Alex in that if he had used his mind, he would have realized that he did not need to put the work into carrying the water bottles up the ladder; there was already a working faucette up there.
ReplyDeleteWillie T.
"If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs," is a proverb used in Chapter 10. In Alex's case, he realized that he didn't need to go through the work in getting the water bottles up the ladder to the floor, because there was a working faucet up there that he could drink from. How I interpret this proverb is; If you don't plan first and look at your surroundings, (use your head/mind,) you are going to have to do the physical work that never actually needed to be done, (using your legs.)
ReplyDeleteEmily E
The meaning of this proverb is that if you can't think straight do the physical work. Using your head might not always work anyways. As long as you have your legs your fine. If your plan goes wrong for instance you can seem to find a way to do something indirectly, why don't you do it with work which has a much higher chance of getting it done. Alex, for instance thought to himself and said that he didn't actually have to carry all those water jugs/bottles up the ladder, he could just drink from the faucet.
ReplyDelete~Cal M.
I feel that the proverb "if you don't use your head, you will have to use your legs" means that if Alex doesn't think out a well thought out plan, he will have to do more physical work.(which will result in more danger for Alex) For example, when Alex was thinking about carrying all those bottles of water up with him, he also could try getting water from the faucet. If Alex hadn't used his head (which is his mind )he would have to use more physical strength to carry all those bottles up with him.
ReplyDeleteCasandra
I agree cassandra with your example of Alex not using his head.
Delete-Dylan J.
The proverb, "If you don'y use your head, you will have to use your legs," means that if you dont think before you act then you will end up doing work that never had to be done. For instance, on page 76, when Alex ends up carrying heavy water bottles up to his hideout then notices that he should have used his head and checked to see if the floor had running tap water (which it did), BEFORE he laboriously hoisted the bottles onto his floor...
ReplyDeleteBen W.
I Agree Ben that that is what the proverb means
Delete-Dylan J.
The proverb use your head "If you don't use your head, you'll have to use your legs" relates to Alex. What it means is if you don’t think before you act you will end up doing more work than is necessary. This relates to Alex because Alex when Alex was bringing the bottles up to his shelter he didn’t stop and think that there was running water in hideout. s\So he ended using a lot more energy than was needed.
ReplyDelete-Dylan J

The proverb “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs.” has great meaning to Alex.
ReplyDeleteWhat it means is if you don't think about what you are doing you will need to use more strength and energy to do it.
It relates to Alex because while he was in his haste to bring bottled water up to his hideout he did not bother to think about the running water that was already there. Because he did not use his head he had to do more work than needed.
Obviously this is a very good thing to keep in mind while struggling with a job. Perhaps if you took time to think about what you are doing you would not need to do as much work.
-Maddie A
I love your reasoning, and I totally agree with it! It's a good thing that you included how he didn't think about the water, so it caused him to use his legs even more.
Delete-Abigail D.
This means that for example if Nazis are walking by and Alex doesn't use his head and walks in the open he will half to run and use his legs.
ReplyDelete-Jon P
I certainly agree with Mother about strenuous mental work.
ReplyDeleteFirst, when you are using your brain for a while, perhaps on a long 10 page test, your BRAIN will often get tired at times, and it could just shut down and make you want to fall asleep. The same thing goes for physical work. If you practice your soccer technique for an hour, your body will end up getting tired, and you may want to fall asleep! It’s exactly the same thing--hard mental work can be just as tiring as anything else, because you are using your brain consistently, so you could get sleepy.
In addition, mental work can even be even TOUGHER than physical work at times. If you are really fit, it could be a simple task to run 2 miles. However, whether you are intelligent or not, it takes mental skill and stamina to do a long, difficult math problem. So, Mother is absolutely correct to say that mental tasks are just as tiring as any other kind.
In conclusion, I am definitely on Mother’s side. Strenuous mental work is certainly difficult, and is just as tiring, if not more tiring, than any other kind of work, just as Mother suggests.
-Abigail D.
I agree with Abigail. I agree because when you overwork your brain, you get tired
DeleteThe proverb If you dont use you head you will have to use you're feet is simple. It is another way of saying that you can either do the smart way, in a short amount of time, or you can do the dumb way that is inefficient and time consuming. This applies to Alex in many ways. A lot of times when he is transporting something, he ends up doing the hard way, and when he is done, he notices that he could have done it another way that would have taken much less work.
ReplyDeleteEmma M-E M
I agree with your piece. I like how you used a bit of a different perspective than others. You said that not using your brain is time consuming-which is very true, while others said that it can be more tiring. They are both great points!

ReplyDeleteI agree with Mother. I think using your mind can be just as tiring as using you body. I learned from MCAS that thinking thoughtfully for a long time is just as tiring and hard as working hard for a long time. When I finished I was equally tired, if not even more tired when I stoped doing the homework.

-John S.
I agree with Mother about hard mental work. It is very tiring to think under stress. Alex is doing this because he has to solve the problem of hiding the ladder, which could give him away if he does it shabbily. I have experienced a similar thing at chess tournaments. It is tiring to think about many possible solutions and having to figure out what will work in your head. Alex's conditions make it exhausting to think about his problem.
ReplyDelete-Jacob Brockman
The meaning of the proverb “If you don’t use your head, you’ll have to use your legs” is that if you don’t think your way out of a situation, you will have to use your body. For example, if you have to cross a pit of lava with big rock spikes coming out of it, you can either try to find a different way to go around it, or just wing it and do your best to get across by jumping on the rock spikes. This relates to Alex when he brings water up to his new ‘house’ because he “used his legs” instead of thinking first. He brought up water bottles without using his head and considering the water faucet that was on his floor. That is the meaning of the proverb, and how it relates to Alex. Does it relate to you in any way?

In the book “The Island on Bird Street”, by Uri Orlev “if you don’t use your head, you’ll have to you use your legs” relates to Alex in many ways. When it says use your legs it doesn’t mean only use your legs it means work. One way is that Alex has to plan ahead. He realized that once he tried the water he didn’t have to. He “carried all those full bottles up for nothing”. He “should have realized that there would be water here.” Next, when Alex was collecting stuff in chapter six he wasn’t thinking how he was gonna carry it and get it in the hideout. If he planned ahead and said I will come back every day and get a little by little that would have been smarter. In addition, Alex has to do a lot of physical tasks and if he plans ahead and uses his head it will be easier. Also, it will be easier to survive if you use your knowledge. In summary, the saying “if you don’t use your head, you’ll have to you use your legs” relates to Alex in many ways as you can see.

ReplyDeleteThe proverb "if you don't use your head, you'll have to use your legs", means that if you don't think, there will be consequences. For example, if you don't use your head and forget to put an emergency exit in a hideout (Old Boruch's statement)then the consequence could be that you get caught.
I think that "use your legs" means "consequences", because using your legs involves more of the body than the brain.

This relates to Alex because Alex could have just looked for a faucet, but instead he decided to carry all the water bottles up the latter. If only he thought a little bit, it would have saved him a lot of energy and time.
