Chapter 11

Chp. 11  Respond to one of the following:

p. 82—Is Alex being realistic when he says that they would never take him away like that?  Why is he so sure?  Should he be that sure?

p. 83 (bottom of the page)—Why does Alex want the bunker to look natural?

90 comments:

  1. Alex is not being realistic because the Germans have the power over people enough power to take people away. Alex said that because he doesn't want to be taken away like the people he has seen. Alex can not control what people do but by saying that he will not be taken away he is saying he doesn't but he doesn't know what will happen in the future.

  2. I do not think Alex is being realistic about the germans.

I say that because in that time period you could not expect what to happen. For example at the beginning of the holocaust nobody what was happening and that was so unexpected. I think that he is so sure because he has not been caught yet and has a good hideout and food. He should not be so sure because one of these times he is not going to be paying attention and he is going to get caught.

In conclusion Alex should not be so confident that he is not going to be caught.

  3. Alex wanted the bunker to look natural because he doesn’t want the German Officers to think that there is someone living nearby. Alex wanted the bunker to look like a looter took a few things, messed up the place and ran. If the German Officers knew that someone was living near than the officers would be on higher alert and there would be a bigger chance that Alex could be found.

  5. Alex wants the bunker to look natural because he doesn't want Germans or Polish officers to get suspicious when they see that the third floor of a ruined house actually looks like a home. They would know that someone is there and go take him away. If you make it look home-like to the public eye, it wouldn't make any difference if you were living in the middle of the road.

  8. Alex wanted his hideout to look natural because he didn’t want it to stand out. If it stood out or look unnatural, looters and guards will take notice. If there is high patrol around Alex, there is a greater chance of him being caught, abused, or killed. He also doesn’t want a detailed investigation or guards around him a lot of the time. If that happens he won’t be able to sneak out and get food. It will help all around for the hideout to look natural, especially because it’s meant to hide in (HIDE-out).

  9. There are many reasons why Alex wanted the bunker to look natural. One reason is he did not want to seem that he looked through and took some of the stuff in the bunker. If the Germans had noticed that the stuff in the bunker had been looked through and looted they probably would have sent out a search. That search would be bad news for Alex because he could be caught. Even with his great hideout, if the Germans were really determined they could find Alex. There are many reasons to why Alex wanted the bunker to look natural, this is only one.

  11. The reason why Alex wanted the bunker to look natural is so German Soldiers would not see it. Because if the bunker looks like a normal home, soldiers will not be able to tell if the bunker is a bunker for Jews, and so they will think it's a home, and they won't investigate it and look for Alex.

  12. Alex wants the bunker to look natural for several reasons. My first thought is that he doesn’t want the Germans to suspect that a Jewish person is living in that house. The reason for that is he doesn’t want any German coming in to look for him. Also Alex would not want to be caught since he promised his father he’d be there when he came back. Lastly another reason for the bunker needing to look natural is if Alex does get caught there would be a very severe punishment for him at this point.

  13. I don’t think that Alex is being realistic. The Germans, at this time, have a lot of power over everyone. They could easily take Alex away if they found him, just like they took his Mom and Dad. Throughout the story, Alex has survived mostly on hope. The hope that his Mother will come back, the hope that his Father will return, and now, the hope that he will not be taken away by the Germans. Even though Alex is not being realistic, I think that he should continue to believe, and be hopeful, so he can live to see the day when what he is saying now IS realistic.

  14. Alex wanted the bunker to look natural for a few reasons. The main reason is that he did not want to get caught by the Germans. If the Germans suspected a Jewish person is in the house, they will search everywhere for him or her. If he got caught, then he would be sent to a concentration camp. Another reason is if Alex disappeared, then he would never see his father again. The only reason Alex is in the house is because he is waiting for his father. Alex also made the bunker look like looters took from it, so that he wouldn’t get caught. If he had gotten caught, then he would have received an unpleasant punishment. Alex needed the bunker to look natural, so that he would be safe.

  15. It was a great idea to make the bunker look natural. If Alex didn't, a German could dig it up and realize it was home to a Jew. Then they would search everywhere for him or her. If Alex was taken away, or even worse, shot, he would never see his father again (if he returns). Personally, I think it was Alex's main goal to see his father again, and this was an important step to doing so.

  16. To quote the book “As though looters had been there”. He did not want the Germans to suspect his presence (and take him to a concentration camp, preventing all chance of ever seeing his father again) , and achieved this by concealing himself as a common looter. The Germans knew the place was going to be looted, so they would have no reason to suspect Alex’s presence.

  17. Alex wants the bunker to look natural because he needs camouflage. Camouflage is a necessity at a time like this because Germans are all around and they are trained at spotting bunkers so if a German walks by and sees one he/she could just shoot the Jew immediately. If it looked natural it would be harder to spot out that person/bunker.

  18. Alex has come up to the plan that he wants the bunker to look natural. The reason he wants this is for many different reasons.

a.) He wants them to look like looters took some stuff, it was messy from their scurrying and looking through things and ran, because he wants them to leave and never come back because they know that know one lives here anymore because people were taking things from it.

b.) He might want it to look natural because if it is too neat or too ordered, it may look like someone had been living in the bunker, because the looters and the people that used to/do live in the house usually aren't that neat, for the sake of not being found.

c.) He may not want the Germans to be attracted by the bunker not being normal. They might (a) want to stay in the bunker to catch people that try to hide in it and (b) be suspicious.

This is why I think that Alex wanted the bunker to look normal.

    Emily E.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that Alex wants the bunker to look normal so that the Germans would not suspect that anyone was still living in the bunker. If Alex hadn't kept it looking natural, he would have either been captured or killed. The quote " as if looters have been there" is even more evidence that Alex doesn't want to be found. At this period of time, it's STAY ALIVE.

  20. Alex wants the bunker to look natural so that when the germans come back to retrieve its supplies they wont suspect that anyone but the common looter would have been there. (They wouldn't search the rest of the house for another hideout...)

  21. Why alex wanted the bunker to look natural is because he wanted to look like o one came here in awhile.Thats why he threw some potatoes on the ground. If he didn't make it look natural the germans or someone else might suspect that someone was taking their supplies. That might make alex situation worse because he would need to find some where else that had food because he can't go back their anymore it would be to risky.

  22. question two

Alex wants the bunker to look natural or “As though looters had been here” because if he had taken almost everything then left the place looking neat it would have raised suspicion. When looters come they don't bother with being neat or being careful they just want to get out of there quickly and although Alex wants to do the same he was not rushing so it looked neater. Also, when he scatters everything about it looks as though multiple looters had been there and not just one person. Right now the Germans do not seem so concerned with the looters, though they would take them if they caught them. But, if they caught Alex they would most certainly kill him or send him to a camp seeing as they are trying to destroy any up coming generations. alex makes the buner look natural to not raise suspicion.

  24. In chapter 11, when Alex says that they will never take him away like that, he is being unrealistic, and he should not be so sure of himself.
The reason he is being unrealistic is because the Germans were in control of a lot in that time. The chances of a small boy surviving alone were very slim. It was unrealistic to think that he would not be caught.
He should not be so sure of himself when he says that he won't be caught that way. Thinking like that may cause him to let his guard down. This could result in capture being more likely.
Alex is very lucky to have evaded capture for so long. Perhaps when he said this he was taking his survival for granted. He was just a small boy, and that was a very big war.

  25. In chapter 11, the reason Alex wanted to make the bunker look realistic is simple. If the Germans or Polish ever found it, and Alex had left he bunker all neat, It would look suspicious, and they would suspect that there was someone near enough to to have heard them search the bunker, and would have searched further. The fact that Alex made it look like looters had been there was smart because it doesn't lead to anything suspicious other than the fact that looters had been there. The reason it dosent seem so bad if looters have been there is because looters can be anywhere, they would be rushing because they don't know how much tine they have. If some one goes in there and leaves it neat, it leads to this suspicion that they know exactly what time they have, so that person must have been there for a long time to observe. This is why I think he left the bunker natural.

  26. I think the reason he made it look natural was because in the time of World War II, when a house was searched, it would be torn apart and left that way. They would not pick everything up and put it back neatly. So if a soldier ever came across the bunker, it will look as if it had already been raided and not be worth checking again.

  28. I would say that Alex was being realistic when he said that they would never take him away.

Alex has been trying to survive for months all by himself, and he is doing a FANTASTIC job! I know that probably no one in our grade could fend for themselves alone, in the cold, starting out with only a few nibbles of food. So, since he has gotten so confident in his survival skills, he knows that he won’t get taken--Alex is a very smart kid. He knows himself, so he’s sure he won’t get caught that way (especially with the assurance of his previous progress and success).

I believe that he should be this sure because it is giving him a big boost of confidence. Alex has really shown me that he knows how to use his surroundings, so he is well aware that he won’t get caught.

In conclusion, I certainly think that Alex is being realistic and believes in himself, which is what makes him so sure of himself. He could even be proud of his great accomplishments, and be getting used to survival, which helps him believe that he won’t get taken.

One reason is that if he made it look neat then the Germans would know someone is near the area. Alex couldn’t let that happen. He had a will to survive. Secondly, it didn’t look neat before he came there so he had to keep it looking like it did before. If the looters came back, and they most likely would, they would notice if there was a mess then no mess. Next, he “threw some odds and ends over the potatoes” he made “it look more natural that way.” He did this to prevent the looters from seeing a difference. In addition, he knows the looters will be back and searching the area. He needs to make it unsuspicious. In conclusion there is many reasons why Alex made the bunker look natural
