Chapter 16
p.
130—Do you feel that Alex’s thinking about his father coming back is changing?Explain your opinion.
I think that Alex is feeling that the chances of his father coming home are very slim because his father hasn't been home for a very long time. Also the money Alex was saving for his father, he gave away all of it to Henryk. Also Alex thinks his father had been captured and is in a concentration camp.
I disagree with Ben K. It does not say directly in the text that Alex thinks that his father has been sent to a concentration camp and that is a big assumption to make about a character.
I disagree with one of Ben's pieces of evidence. You said that Alex gave the money he had been saving for his father to Henryk. Alex actually gave him the coat, and probably because it was very cold outside and Henryk needed it.
I don't think that Alex is doubting his father's returning. Why, well because when Bolek asked Alex to stay with him on the Polish side Alex sadly turned them down because he was waiting for his father to come back and find him. So I don't think Alex is losing faith because he still believes that his father is coming back to get him.
I think that Alex is not losing faith that his father will come for these reasons: Since Alex was offered to stay with the Bolek, he declined because he was faithful that his father would come home. Also, throughout the whole book he was faithful that his father would return. Like when Alex was looting the other house he brought a coat for his father. So this is why I think that Alex is faithful that his father will return.
I do think that Alex is feeling different about his dad coming back because his father hasn't come back in a while such as months and that's when people loose hope.
I do not think Alex has changed his opinion on whether or not his father is coming home. Just because he gave a cold man who is sick and injured a coat that Alex was saving for his father does not mean that Alex now believes that his father will never come back. Alex just denied a great opportunity to have a better life because he thinks his father will come. I do not think he changed his mind in the ten minuets between giving the coat to the sick and cold man and denying the opportunity to live a safer life.
I think that Alex is NOT starting to question his father's return for these reasons.
One, when Bolek asked alex to stay at his place, Alex refused claiming that his father would return home and he would want to wait for him at home. Two, When he was scavengering throughout the houses he found suits and he said he would save it for his father when he returned home. Three, Alex throughout the whole book had been waiting for his father's return and it seems like he has still not lost his hope.
In conclusion Alex has not lost faith in his father returning home.
I think Alex is too caught up in many other things to really be thinking about his dad coming back. He just has to think about surviving for now and how to help everyone else, but also the fact that people are starting to make up like an illusion of his dad. He might have other figures that symbolize his dad in ways, that can trigger thoughts that he is comfortable and safe and there is no point to think about his dad.
I think Alex is still sure in his father's return. The main reason I think this because last we read he was still confident that he father was going to return. Even refusing a chance to live outside of the ghetto going school, when asked his reason why he said “I'm waiting for my father” Alex is giving up the option of going to school, when he has enviously watched the children from the Polish side walk exactly there from his hideout. He is also refusing guaranteed food and water, just so he can wait for his father. This shows us that he is confident in his father's return, and that it has not wavered from when he was collecting things for him. -Anna.J
I think that Alex is not changing his opinion about his father. He is still rejecting others because he is waiting for his father. Alex was only doing it out of kindness. He was trying to help Henryk, because he is still injured and it is cold. If Alex just rejected a wonderful comfortable life, for his father. Handing a coat over means nothing.
I think Alex’s opinion about his father coming back is changing. Alex is not still confident about his father’s return because on page 130 Alex gives away the coat he had been saving for his father. He gave it to Henryk. Then he filled the coat’s pockets with sugar cubes. This is showing that he doesn't mind giving his father’s stuff away which he had collected and was saving for his father’s return. ~Sonia N
I think Alex’s thoughts may have changed slightly but not that much. In chapter 16, Bolek and his wife asked Alex if he wanted to get an identity as their nephew. Alex then responded that he’s waiting for his father. It may still mean that he has still allot of hope that his father might come home. Also when Freddy asked Alex if he wanted to go to the uprising and help them revolt against the Nazies, Alex also said no because he’s waiting for his father. I think he’s still remembering what Boruch told him when he ran. He said “If it takes a week, a month, or even a year. I think Alex has been sticking by that saying since day one, and has continued to depend on that sentence that Boruch told him. -Daphnee-Anne G.
I don’t think Alex has changed his opinion about his father coming back. Even after he went to see Bolek, he STILL wanted to wait for his father. The hope that his father will come back is what pushes him on.
I don't think Alex has lost faith that his father won't come back. In chapter 16, Bolek and his wife asked him to stay, but he didn't because he still wanted to wait for his father. Another reason is that when people asked him to go, he wouldn't. He always said that he was waiting for his father to return.
I don't think that Alex is rejecting the idea of his father coming home. He gave the coat to Henryk because he is a nice person, and Henryk gave him money later anyways,so it was a fair trade. In the book, Alex showed no sign that he thought that his dad wouldn't come home. If he thought that his dad wasn't coming home, he wouldn't have accepted the money from Henryk, or any other help from any other person. Therefore, I think that Alex still thinks that his father is coming home.
I think Alex is starting to give up hope. The chances of his father coming back are becoming slimmer and slimmer, and it doesn't seem likely that his father will come back. Though I don't think that Alex is giving up completely, and that he still left out the "treasure", proving there could be a small sliver of hope left. And I don't believe Alex is very willing to give up.
I don't think that Alex’s feelings about his father coming back are changing because when Bolek’s wife asked Alex if he wanted to stay with them, Alex remained faithful to his father and said no. On the other hand, Alex gave away the jacket he was saving for his father. I think that Alex knows that his father probably won't come back, but he is still hanging on to the hope that he will.
I agree with you Maya. Alex would have stayed if he did not think his father was coming back. He stayed faithful to his father. I also agree with the fact that Alex may realize that his father is not coming back. It has been awhile yet Alex choses to stay waiting for his father.
I think that he has changed his thoughts a little but not a lot. For example, when he needed to escort Henryk from the Ghetto to the Polish side, he gave Henryk the jacket he was saving for his father. That showed that he gave up little hope. But, he still did not go with Henryk. He went back to hiding. Sam S
Sam- I agree. Alex still had faith in his father, but it is starting to die a little. He has never gone with anyone because he is waiting for father, but he DID give Henryk the jacket.
Alex may be losing faith that his father will come home, but not by very much. He tells everyone who asks him to stay with them that he can’t because he says, “I’m waiting for my father.” No one would decline hospitality because they are waiting for someone they don’t even believe will come! Maybe, since Alex has had to wait for months now, does he think that his father might not come home. But, I know that Alex still has plenty faith in his father’s return, or he wouldn’t keep making the choices that he does.
I think Alex thinking of his father coming back is changing. One reason is that he has other stuff to do like helping Henryk and trying to find some food. Another reason is that it has been awhile since Alex saw his father and Alex may have forgot about him. Another reason is that Alex is meeting new people. I think Alex is changing on thinking his father will come back and these reasons show why.
Alex thinks about his father coming back all the time throughout the book First he saves a coat for his father for when he returns And then he saves his family's photo album. Then when Boleck offers to take Alex in, he says no. Because he is waiting for his father to come back. Alex has much hope that his father will return. -Faith E.
I think that Alex still believes that his father will come back because Alex's father promised and Alex believes that his father will keep his promise. Another reason is Alex kept the photo album and a coat for his father for when he returns. When Boleck offers for Alex to live with them he says no because he has to wait for his father.
I think Alex’s opinion is slowly changing about his father, but it hasn’t changed completely. Like I said in my last response, if Alex thought his father was coming back, he would’ve moved in with Bolek’s family by now. I think Alex still has hope, but he isn’t one hundred percent sure like he was before. Since Alex gave Henryk the jacket he was saving for Father, that might hint that he has lost faith in his father’s return, or that may just mean that he thinks Henryk needs it more than his father will. Alex giving Henryk the coat may have signified Alex not believing his father will return, or it could just mean that Henryk needed it more. One way or another, Alex stayed in that apartment building, so he must still believe that his Father will return.
I'm not sure that Alex is changing his feelings about his father coming back because when Alex was looking throughout the houses near him, he found suits and he said he would save it for his father when he returned home. But he did give the jacket to Henryk so I'm a little bit torn.
Alex’s thinking about his father coming back is changing. A example of it changing is when Bolek and his wife ask him to stay with them he hesitates, then sadly says no. This shows he was thinking about staying, if he stayed his father wouldn’t be able to find him. Alex knew this, but he was beginning to believe his father was not coming back, but then he say no. This is why I think Alex’s thinking about his father coming back is changing.
I think Alex knows there is a small chance that his father will come back because they are in the middle of a big war and Alex is moving and trying to keep safe. But I think he still believes that his father will find him because he left the note on the wall and he rejected staying with Bolek because he was still waiting for the father to come back.
I believe that Alex's hope of seeing his father again is growing slimmer. Since he hasn't seen his father for so long, his hopes (maybe) are dying down. If I was in his shoes, I would probably question my own hope at some point later on.
But in many chapters such as chapter 12, he hasn't given up hope there. His father has promised to come back for Alex, so he probably hasn't forgotten that.
I think that Alex is slowly loosing hope, but not all of it is lost yet. I think this because Alex is still turning down the offers that people are giving him, because he wants to be at 78 Bird St. when his father returns. This proves that Alex is still hopeful that his father will return. On the contrary, for the first time Alex gave away a piece of clothing he was saving for his father without a problem. This proves that he is loosing hope that his father will return because Alex has been saving the coat for months but still decided to give it away. Alex's hope is like a fire that is slowly getting dimmer. Alex's father better return soon, or the fire could be completely extinguished.
No I don't think its changed because when Boleck wife and him that they should stay with them.Alex said he can't even though he really wants too.He said no because he still is waiting for he's father.Every day he keeps thinking about him and when he's going home. -Shaniay C
I think Alex thinks the chances of his Father coming is getting smaller.I think he thinks that because his Father has been gone to long and there are no signs or message that his father is even still alive let alone coming back.
I don't think Alex's think about his father coming back is changing. One reason I think this is because Alex mentions his Father a lot. If he did not think his father was coming back he would not have kept mentioning him. Another reason why I think this is because Alex was still concerned about the note he had left. If Alex thought his father was not coming back he would not keep thinking about the note he left. Alex has a lot of hope that his father will come back.
I think Alex's feelings about his father father coming back are changing because he has watched so many days without seeing a sign of his father. He can also feel many people want to tell him that he won't come back but they don't have the nerves. John B
I think Alex's feeling that his father coming back is weakening. I think this because there are more uprisings = more Jews will die. I also think this because the gettos are all more protective now because of uprisings.
Alex finally is accepting the fact that his father's chances of coming back are getting smaller and smaller every second. He has waited for months thinking "he will come back! I MUST wait for him!" but now he is scared that his father won't. When Alex told Freddy about when and where his father got taken Freddy had responded in a peculiar way and said that he would save it for later. Alex is losing his hope of his father coming back but he still has to keep believing in his father!
Alex is losing some hope of his father ever coming back. First of all, it has been such a long time, and even though Old Boruch to keep waiting forever, the chances of Alex's father of coming back are very small. When Henryk decided to leave, Alex gave him the heavy winter coat that he was saving for his father. If Alex was saving it for his father, why would he give the coat away, unless he didn't think that his father was coming back? If Ale had really thought his father was coming back, he would have stayed in his original hideout, to make sure that his father found him there.
In the book “The Island on Bird Street”, by Uri Orlev I claim that Alex is very slowly get worn down into not hoping. My first point is that Alex gave the coat he was planning on giving his father to Henryk. This is very major. Mental tools is what was keeping Alex from going insane. This is what prevent him from losing hope. It might be that Alex thinks Henryk needs it more but I think he is just getting worn down like an old shoe. His hope is slowly fading and sooner or later there will be none left and thats when Alex is in trouble. If you don’t have hope you don’t have anything. Why do you think Alex was surviving this whole time. Yes it was from using his brain but it is also from staying hopeful. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have had a will to survive, he wouldn’t have waited for his father he would have given up and said theres no point father is dead. I will die too since there is nothing for me to live for. Next, Alex has started to rely on people and trust them. He might be feeling that he can’t rely on his dad so he has to start finding people to get things he needs from in case father doesn't’ come back. I think when all his hope is about to run out he is gonna set a time where he is gonna leave. If he does this he will have hope but won’t be forever and get his dreams crushed. Its also gonna prevent him from wondering if his father is really still out there looking for him. As you can see Alex is barely holding onto his hope anymore, which is truly terrible.
In the book The Island on Bird Street Alex's faith in his Father I don't think is wavering. I don't think Alex's hope in his Father has changed at all because Alex even though being offered to be taken in by the Gryns and Bolek he denied. Even though with Bolek he thought about and wanted to say yes he still declined because he believes in his Father.
Alexs hope of seeing his father has not changed. He always says he has to wait for his father. He still believes his father is coming back. The hope never dropped. ~Vanessa Y.
I think Alex has not lost hope in his father returning. I think this because he refuses to move out of the ghetto. He believes that his father will come back because he always believed in his father and believes he is very strong and has a lot of hope.
I believe that Alex still is hopeful that his Father will come back, but his feelings have changed just a bit. Alex certainly shows that he is faithful about his father’s return because he didn’t move in with Bolek. Alex explained that he has been waiting for his father, and STILL is waiting--but that doesn’t mean he has lost hope just because he has been waiting so long. In addition, Alex mentions or thinks about his father in nearly EVERY chapter. This shows to me that he is definitely not forgetting about him, and still has hope that Father will come back. Despite Alex’s constant thoughts about Father, Alex “brought down the heavy winter coat that [he] had been saving for Father.” I was a bit surprised since lately, Father had been on his mind. Since Alex had given Father’s coat to Henryk, it made me feel like he was losing some hope about Father coming back. In conclusion, I do believe that Alex’s thinking about his father coming back is changing, however, he still does have hope. Alex shows his hope by not choosing to live with Bolek (because if he did, Father might not have found him if he came back), and also because he has had Father on his mind quite a bit. However, his thoughts and feelings may be changing because he gave the coat he was saving for Father to Henryk. This showed me that his emotions were shifting because he lost a bit of hope for Father to return by giving the coat to Henryk.
Alex is still sticking to his belief that his father is going to come back. I know this because he continues to refuse offers of safety outside the ghetto. When he gives the coat he had been saving for his dad to Henryk, it just shows that he is compassionate enough to give a cold man a coat. He still thinks that his father will return.
Alex has a great hope that his father will return because he already lost his mother and can’t stand to lose his father. He stays and denies the requests for him to leave and to stays in his hideout. His feeling that his father is coming back is diminishing but his hope is just getting stronger. He is starting to notice that every day gone by is another day without his father but just hopes for him to come. He unfortunately understands that there is less of a chance of his father coming home (not saying he won’t but Alex’s thought of it is lessening). -Elon L.
Elon, I fully agree with you about the fact that just because the feeling of his father never coming back is fading, it doesn't mean his hope isn't getting stronger!
I do not think Alex's feelings about his father are changing majorly. Alex has had many chances to leave #78 Bird Street and have a good life for the remainder of the war but he doesn't. He even goes to great lengths to leave notes for his father if he were to return while Alex was away.
I think thatAlex is thinking differently about his father. One reason is that he doesn't bring up that his father will come back anymore. Another reason is that he is thinking about going to the Polish side.
I don't think Alex's about his father coming back is changing that much. I say that because when Bolek told Alex he could stay with him and his wife Alex refused to go with them. And I could tell Alex really wanted to go with Bolek but Alex is still waiting for his father so Alex decided to not go anywhere.
Alex wants to be a doctor for one reason. The reason is that doctors help people and that is what Alex wants to do. Alex is sure that he wants to be a doctor after he sees how good of a person the doctor was. For helping him look decent to helping Henryk and risking his life by going across the border to save another.
I think his hope is changing but his mane goal is still there. He still thinks he gona see him but his hope of it is sorta of fading slowly like giving the coat to Henryk he was saving it for his dad.
Nick I disagree that Alex is losing hope the only reason he gave the Henryk the coat was so Henryk could survive, but he still had other things for his father.
I don’t think that Alex’s feelings about his father coming back are changing. First, whenever anyone asks him what he is doing alone in the ghetto, he tells them that he is waiting for his father. Also, he tells anybody who offers to let him live with them that he can’t because he is waiting for his father. The fact that Alex would deny the chance for a safe life, because his father will come signifies that he hasn’t lost faith that s father will come. I don’t think Alex has lost faith in his father.
I think that Alex is still feeling hope that his father will come back, just not as much. First of all, it’s been a long time since he last saw his father. The last time he saw his father was almost a year ago (not sure, but I think). Another reason could be that Some hope left in him could that when Bolek, the looter, said that Alex could stay with him on the Polish side. But Alex said no, that he was waiting for his father. Overall, though there could bits of hope that his father will come back, and other parts that he won’t.
Alex is losing hope of his father ever coming back. First of all, it has been such a long time, and even though Old Boruch said to keep waiting, the chances of Alex's father coming back are very small. When Henryk decided to leave, Alex gave him the heavy winter coat that he was saving for his father. If Alex was saving it for his father, why would he give the coat away? It is because he didn't think that his father was returning. If Alex had really thought his father was coming back, he would have stayed in his original hideout to make sure that his father found him there. Alex is starting to except the fact that his father is not coming back for a long time, if ever.
I think Alex still has hope that his Father is coming back. I know this because he refused to leave his hide out to come live with Belok at his house even though he would be getting away from the Germans, and would get food for free. He still wants to wait for his father, which shows he has lots of hope left.
I feel that Alex's opinions on his father coming back are not changing. I feel this way because at the beginning of the book Alex did believe his father was coming back, and as the story progressed, Alex had many chances to leave the building, and live in a safer place. He declined all offers. When he did he thought of his father coming to the building, shouting his name, and no one replying. This is not the smartest thing to think. Alex is risking his survival to possible see his father again, and this is unwise because since his father has been missing for many months, it is likely that his father will not return home. -Maddie A
Alex definitely feels something different about his father returning. I know that somewhere Alex does truly believe that is father will return someday, whether alone or with someone. When Boruch gave him the backpack and told him to run, he told Alex to never leave #78 Bird Street no matter if it took his father a day, a week, a month, or a year. Alex obeyed this every time he was invited to stay somewhere else, so obviously he feels something about his father returning.
Alex may have fading faith about his father actually coming, but he keeps that one bit of strength to keep him to his family that entire time. Alex does start doing this for himself, leaving notes, and starts to learn things his father would've taught him if they ever met again. Alex obviously did have some disbelief, but I think it's fair to say that he was at a 50% range for either side.
These are the reasons I think that Alex is having mixed emotions about his father returning.
I think he may because the chances are getting smaller and smaller.
ReplyDeleteI agree because Alex's father has been away for a very long time. And Alex is starting to feel hopeless.

For example, when he needed to escort Henryk from the Ghetto to the Polish side, he gave Henryk the jacket he was saving for his father. That showed that he gave up little hope. But, he still did not go with Henryk. He went back to hiding.
ReplyDeleteSam S
Sam- I agree. Alex still had faith in his father, but it is starting to die a little. He has never gone with anyone because he is waiting for father, but he DID give Henryk the jacket.
Delete~Derek K.
ReplyDelete~Derek K.
ReplyDeleteDerek C.
Alex thinks about his father coming back all the time throughout the book First he saves a coat for his father for when he returns And then he saves his family's photo album. Then when Boleck offers to take Alex in, he says no. Because he is waiting for his father to come back. Alex has much hope that his father will return.
ReplyDelete-Faith E.
I think that Alex still believes that his father will come back because Alex's father promised and Alex believes that his father will keep his promise. Another reason is Alex kept the photo album and a coat for his father for when he returns. When Boleck offers for Alex to live with them he says no because he has to wait for his father.
ReplyDeleteI think Alex’s opinion is slowly changing about his father, but it hasn’t changed completely.
ReplyDelete~Isabela G.
I'm not sure that Alex is changing his feelings about his father coming back because when Alex was looking throughout the houses near him, he found suits and he said he would save it for his father when he returned home. But he did give the jacket to Henryk so I'm a little bit torn.
ReplyDelete~Kelley
I am also torn, Kelley. He did give Father's jacket to Henryk, which shows that he has changed his feelings a bit.
Delete-Abigail D.
ReplyDeleteCammi M
I think Alex knows there is a small chance that his father will come back because they are in the middle of a big war and Alex is moving and trying to keep safe. But I think he still believes that his father will find him because he left the note on the wall and he rejected staying with Bolek because he was still waiting for the father to come back.

I agree with you Will. Like a fire over time, Alex's hope is growing dimmer, but has not been extinguished yet.
Delete-Becca L.
I absolutely agree with what Becca said. That is a perfect example of it. It illustrated it perfectly. I wish i could use that in my comment!
DeleteSivan A.
I believe that Alex's hope of seeing his father again is growing slimmer. Since he hasn't seen his father for so long, his hopes (maybe) are dying down. If I was in his shoes, I would probably question my own hope at some point later on.
ReplyDeleteCasandra G.
But in many chapters such as chapter 12, he hasn't given up hope there. His father has promised to come back for Alex, so he probably hasn't forgotten that.
DeleteCasandra G.

ReplyDelete-Shaniay C
I agree, Shaniay. Alex does seem to mention his Father quite a bit.
Delete-Abigail D.
I think Alex thinks the chances of his Father coming is getting smaller.I think he thinks that because his Father has been gone to long and there are no signs or message that his father is even still alive let alone coming back.
ReplyDelete~Edward A.
I agree that there haven't been many signs of Alex, but he still shows hope!
Delete-Abigail D.
ReplyDelete~Hayley C.
I think Alex's feelings about his father father coming back are changing because he has watched so many days without seeing a sign of his father. He can also feel many people want to tell him that he won't come back but they don't have the nerves.
ReplyDeleteJohn B
I agree that many people are telling him that he won't come back, but Alex still thinks about Father, which means he still has some hope.
Delete-Abigail D.
Also, what people want to tell him that his father won't come back?
DeleteJulia Y.
I think Alex's feeling that his father coming back is weakening. I think this because there are more uprisings = more Jews will die. I also think this because the gettos are all more protective now because of uprisings.
ReplyDelete-Ben B
I agree, Ben. But in some cases, Alex still shows hope (he didn't live with Bolek).
Delete-Abigail D.
ReplyDeleteMatt G
Alex is losing some hope of his father ever coming back. First of all, it has been such a long time, and even though Old Boruch to keep waiting forever, the chances of Alex's father of coming back are very small.
ReplyDeleteWhen Henryk decided to leave, Alex gave him the heavy winter coat that he was saving for his father. If Alex was saving it for his father, why would he give the coat away, unless he didn't think that his father was coming back?
If Ale had really thought his father was coming back, he would have stayed in his original hideout, to make sure that his father found him there.
Julia Y.
ReplyDeleteSivan A.
ReplyDelete-John S.
Alexs hope of seeing his father has not changed. He always says he has to wait for his father. He still believes his father is coming back.
ReplyDeleteThe hope never dropped.
~Vanessa Y.
I agree that it hasn't changed too much, but didn't he just give Father's coat away?
Delete-Abigail D.
I think Alex has not lost hope in his father returning. I think this because he refuses to move out of the ghetto. He believes that his father will come back because he always believed in his father and believes he is very strong and has a lot of hope.
ReplyDelete~Jack LeBlanc
I agree, Jack. However, he has lost some hope because he gave Father's coat to Henryk.
Delete-Abigail D.
I believe that Alex still is hopeful that his Father will come back, but his feelings have changed just a bit.
ReplyDeleteAlex certainly shows that he is faithful about his father’s return because he didn’t move in with Bolek.
-Abigail D.
I agree that Alex isn't losing hope because he doesn't move in with Bolek.
Delete-Dylan J
Alex is still sticking to his belief that his father is going to come back. I know this because he continues to refuse offers of safety outside the ghetto. When he gives the coat he had been saving for his dad to Henryk, it just shows that he is compassionate enough to give a cold man a coat. He still thinks that his father will return.
ReplyDelete-Jacob B.
ReplyDelete-Elon L.
Elon, I fully agree with you about the fact that just because the feeling of his father never coming back is fading, it doesn't mean his hope isn't getting stronger!
Delete-Emily E
I do not think Alex's feelings about his father are changing majorly. Alex has had many chances to leave #78 Bird Street and have a good life for the remainder of the war but he doesn't. He even goes to great lengths to leave notes for his father if he were to return while Alex was away.
ReplyDeleteBennett E
I think thatAlex is thinking differently about his father. One reason is that he doesn't bring up that his father will come back anymore. Another reason is that he is thinking about going to the Polish side.
ReplyDeleteRobert doherty
I don't think Alex's about his father coming back is changing that much. I say that because when Bolek told Alex he could stay with him and his wife Alex refused to go with them. And I could tell Alex really wanted to go with Bolek but Alex is still waiting for his father so Alex decided to not go anywhere.
ReplyDelete-J.L.
Alex wants to be a doctor for one reason. The reason is that doctors help people and that is what Alex wants to do. Alex is sure that he wants to be a doctor after he sees how good of a person the doctor was. For helping him look decent to helping Henryk and risking his life by going across the border to save another.
ReplyDeleteEleasah W.
I think his hope is changing but his mane goal is still there. He still thinks he gona see him but his hope of it is sorta of fading slowly like giving the coat to Henryk he was saving it for his dad.
ReplyDeleteNick T
Nick I disagree that Alex is losing hope the only reason he gave the Henryk the coat was so Henryk could survive, but he still had other things for his father.
Delete-Dylan J
I don’t think that Alex’s feelings about his father coming back are changing. First, whenever anyone asks him what he is doing alone in the ghetto, he tells them that he is waiting for his father. Also, he tells anybody who offers to let him live with them that he can’t because he is waiting for his father. The fact that Alex would deny the chance for a safe life, because his father will come signifies that he hasn’t lost faith that s father will come. I don’t think Alex has lost faith in his father.
ReplyDeleteEmma MEM
This is true, but do you think that Alex is doubting the fact that his father is coming soon?
DeleteJulia Y.

If Alex had really thought his father was coming back, he would have stayed in his original hideout to make sure that his father found him there. Alex is starting to except the fact that his father is not coming back for a long time, if ever.
Julia Y.
I think Alex still has hope that his Father is coming back. I know this because he refused to leave his hide out to come live with Belok at his house even though he would be getting away from the Germans, and would get food for free. He still wants to wait for his father, which shows he has lots of hope left.
ReplyDelete-Dylan J
I feel that Alex's opinions on his father coming back are not changing. I feel this way because at the beginning of the book Alex did believe his father was coming back, and as the story progressed, Alex had many chances to leave the building, and live in a safer place. He declined all offers. When he did he thought of his father coming to the building, shouting his name, and no one replying.
ReplyDeleteThis is not the smartest thing to think. Alex is risking his survival to possible see his father again, and this is unwise because since his father has been missing for many months, it is likely that his father will not return home.
-Maddie A
I am torn because Alex did give his fathers jacket to Bolek even though he wanted to save it for his Father.

ReplyDeleteAlex may have fading faith about his father actually coming, but he keeps that one bit of strength to keep him to his family that entire time.
