Chapter 5

Chp. 5

Keep in mind one of our essential questions:  Does survival make people do things they know in their hearts are wrong?

Respond to one of the following questions.

p. 38—Why do you think that the Gryns, especially Pan Gryn is acting so rudely to Alex?  Are you surprised at how they treat him?  Explain your answer.

p. 41—The Gryns ask Alex if he trusts them or not.  Do you think that Alex should trust the Gryns?  Explain your answer.

p. 42—Should the Gryns give Alex food to take with him?  How much?  Would you have?

p. 43—Why are pictures important to people, especially during this period of war time?

  1. I think the Gryns and especially Pan were very rude to Alex. I think they were that rude because the war changes people and everyone is just doing what they think is right for there family so they can survive and get through this tough time still alive. Also, people still in the ghettos are over stocking especially for this point in the war where everyone was selected to leave the ghettos because you do not know how long you can be in there but, all they know is the longer they are in there the more food they need. I am not surprised because everyone is scared and they all just want to get through this.

    1. I agree with your point, Will that war does change people and just do whatever could save their family or do whatever "feels" right.

    4. I think Will is definitely right on that war does change people, and people must take drastic measures to survive

  2. I think that people at that period of time keep pictures and are very important to them because when people lose someone in a war and they have no way to connect back to that person, they need to keep some part of them, even if it's just a picture! Those pictures people think are very important symbolize maybe a person that died in war and it's that person's way of remembering him/her. If you take away the picture, then they will be forever sad. This is why I think that pictures are important to people.

    1. I agree with you because, pictures do help people connect to there loved ones, even if there gone. They also bring back happy memories.

  3. The pictures were really important to people back then. They were important because during that time there was a war going on and lots of people died from the war and as a memory of their loved ones they keep a photo of them wherever they went. Also for Alex his father wasn't with him and so is his mother, so he really needs the photo a possession.

  4. I believe that pictures are very important to people, especally during the war time. Pictures and photographs were one way to connect to their past.
If somebody is born during the war times, then photographs might not be as important to them. But to somebody that knew what life was like before the war, they might want to try to connect to it.
People take pictures of happy times, and maybe during the war, someone can look at the picture and say, "When the war is over, I will be just as happy as I was in that photograph."
People use pictures and photographs to connect to their past. While they might be useless to some some, to others, they are very important.

  5. I think that pictures were really important to people back in the time period of the book. Pictures would help keep them from falling apart. They would remind them of the happy times of before and after the war.

  6. The pictures are important to people in war time for many reasons. One reason that pictures are important to people is that they remind people of that moment in time and what they and their families have been through. Another reason is that they remember what they have been through so they know that they can overcome more. Pictures in war times were very important.

  7. I think that Gryns should’ve given some food , these are some of my reasons.

The story takes place during world war 2 so of course times are tough. People are also hungry. Alex is only a kid so the Gryns should’ve given him some food, not all of it, there was a lot of food there, so the Gryns should’ve gotten around 5 times more food than him. The Gryns should’ve gotten more food than him is because they are a whole family and Alex is only one person, therefore he should get a smaller share than a whole family.

I would’ve given Alex some food because since everyones starving, everyone should help each other a little. I would give the same amount I mentioned before because Alex is smaller than the whole family. But if I were by myself, I would’ve given him 49/100 of the food.

These are my reasons for why the Gryns should’ve given Alex some food.

I think that the the Gryn's were rude to Alex because in times like this where there isn't enough food people think of themselves and their families more. For example the Gryn's stole all of Alex's families food because the they assumed they were dead and no one would miss it. Also when times are tough people will turn on their once friends just to survive.

  10. I think the Gryn's should have given Alex food because most of the food that they had they had gotten was from his half of the house. Also they were staying in his bunker and using all the stuff in and around the house. Even though they gave him some food it was not enough for very long. What do you think?

  12. Pictures are important to people especially during wartime because people die in the war. Family and friends will want to show remembrance of the family member that died. Also, pictures help show people what it was like way back when there were real wars. It will show them not to do what people did, like killing people. Not only that there were wars, but there were lots of slaves that suffered.

  13. i think that servival does make people that they know in their hearts are wrong because you could just get people to help you build a bunker and then you could kill them for there food and other stuff like clothing.

  15. I think the Gryns should give Alex food to take with him.
They are stealing from alex’s food and that’s that not fair.
The poor child is waiting for his father , that hasn’t come back yet.
Alex can’t survive without food and neither can the gryns .
They should have put themselves in Alex’s shoes and realized that he is suffering of hunger.
Yes, if I were the gryns i would have given Alex some food.

  16. I think the Gryns were acting mean for two reasons. One reason is that they didn't want to run out of food or they would die. My second reason is that if Alex came too often the germans might notice something weird and investigate and capture the Gryns and Alex. In conclusion that's why the Gryns didn't want to give Alex food.

  17. I think pictures are important to people during war time because many people need the memorise to survive through their terrifying situation. I know that there must be something that you're fighting for and memorise is a great way to keep you focused and know what you’re fighting for. The pictures are reminders for people to keep living because that is what they are fighting for. That is the reward if they live through the war. People need some goals in life, even now we need goals to improve ourselves.

  18. The Gryns were very rude to Alex. Especially Pan Gryn. They had very good reasons for acting this way. In that desperate time, survival was the most important thing. Alex was knocking very loudly on the entrance to the Gryn's hideout. This could have easily given them away. Alex risked the Gryn's chance of surviving, and by doing this he made them angry. I know that if someone had risked my survival, to contact me, I would have become extremely mad. He also asked them for food. I feel that this was the wrong thing to do, and of course made them even more mad. Food is a very valuable thing, and later in the book you can tell by Alex fighting with three people over a few bags of food. Alex had not done anything to help the Gryns, and may have revealed where they were hiding to Germans. If I was the one of the Gryns I would have been outraged that he had even dared to ask me for such an enormous favor after what he did. Because of Alex’s actions I was not at all surprised by what the Gryns did, and I actually found them rather fair.

  19. I think the Gryns should give the food to Alex. His family helped build the bunker. The Gryns should pay him back for helping to build the bunker. However, the Gryns have a good argument too. They needed to survive and needed all the food they could get. Also Alex knocked so loudly that if there were guards around they would be caught. If I were the Gryns, it would be a tough decision. I would probably only give him a little bit.

  20. The Gryns are acting very rudely to Alex because all people want in the ghetto is to survive and because of Alex's carelessness, they could be caught, and killed. Pan had said "Do you want to bring the whole German army here?" In their lifestyle they must think that children should be scolded and taught not to do it again. I am not surprised to see that they treated him this way because I can see that they want to do whatever it takes to keep living another day. Alex should have been less careless if he didn't want to bring in "visitors."

  21. I think there are many reasons that the Gryns are being so rude to Alex. First, I think that they are scared that the german army would hear him yelling come, and therefore, they acted irrationally. Next, I think Alex disturbed them. Perhaps they did not expect Alex to show up, and they could have been surprised, and therefore over reacted at his appearance. Lastly, the Gryns could have just been in a bad mood, and therefore been rude to Alex. Those are the reasons that the Gryns were rude to Alex.

  22. Pictures were very important to people back in the war time. First, the pictures can help them if someone they loved has passed away. The pictures can make them feel happy and safe remembering the good times they had with them. Also the pictures can remind them of bad times which can make them think that if they had overcome those not so good times, they can overcome this with no problem. They can think If they did it then, they can do it again.

  23. I don’t think Alex should trust the Gryns. One reason is that the Gryns were a family and if they were threaten they would give Alex away. Another reason is that the Gryns is trying to survive like Alex. Another reason is that the Gryns ask where his father is and that feels suspicious. These are good reasons why Alex shouldn’t trust the Gryns.

  24. Pictures are very important to people during wartime. They can remind you of the better times before the war, which would keep you from losing hope that things will get better. They could also provide a way to remember someone who you might never see again. Pictures can let you connect to the past, which can provide a lot of comfort during a war.
